What Is Swine Flu or H1N1 Flu?
What is Swine Flu ?
What are the symptoms ?
How can I protect myself ?
Swine influenza, or swine flu, is a respiratory disease in pigs causes by certin strain of type A influenza virus. Outbreaks of swine flu are not common among humans: Most people who get swine flu are infected through contact with pigs. The severity of swine flu in humans can vary from mild to severe.
Facts About Swine Flu(CNN)
The United States government declared a public health emergency Sunday as the number of identified cases of swine flu in the nation rose to 20.The declaration is part of a "standard operating procedure" that will make available additional government resources to combat the virus, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said at the White House.Additional cases of swine flu are expected to be reported in the coming days, added Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No one has died in the U.S. from swine flu, officials said Sunday. The World Health Organization advised all countries to be on the lookout for "unusual" outbreaks of flu, after an emergency meeting Saturday as the seriousness of the outbreak became clear.By Sunday, 81 deaths in Mexico had been deemed "likely linked" to swine flu. Viral testing has confirmed 20 cases, said Dr. Jose A. Cordova Villalobos, Mexico's health secretary.
How it spreads ?
Although people typically get swine flu from contact with pigs, there have been cases of person-to-person transmission. Expert think coughing, sneezing and contaminated surfaces can spread the infection among people, but it's unknown how easily that happens. The virus cannot be obtained through eating properly cooked pork or any pork product.
What are the symptoms ?
The symptoms are similar to those of the common flu: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Also , like the common flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.Symptoms of diarrhea vomitting have also been reported. Infection from virus can lead to sevre illness, including pneumonia and respiratory failure, and can be fatal.
The current WHO phase of pandemic alert is 3 https://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/statements/2009/h1n1_20090425/en/
How can I protect myself ?
Do what you'd do in other flu outbreaks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising people to "take the ordinary steps they would take to protect themselves:
(1) Frequent hand washing !,
(2) Making sure you cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.
(3) Because so much is still unknown at this point, the main risk factor is people traveling to areas where cases have already been identified. "However this virus may already be in other places in the United States," CDCspokesman Tom Skinner told CNN. "With enhanced surveillance, we will see more cases and that is why it makes good sense to be proactive, by doing things we know are effective in reducing exposure."
(4) Sick people should not go into work, nor should sick children be sent to school.
(5) If you're sick, stay home, get treatment, go see a doctor !

Treatment for High Blood Cholesterol
The beauty of herbal treatment for High Blood cholesterol.
I want to share a secret for treating high cholesterol.
Three weeks ago I went for a cholesterol check.
To my surprise, it was above the normal range which should be less than 5.2 mmol/L.
My reading obtained was 6.6. I had been consuming a lot of red meat and lamb recently.
After consuming Mok Yee (Chinese black wood fungus 黑木耳 ) for two weeks, l had my cholesterol checked again and found that my cholesterol level fell to 4.70 mmol/L.
My pharmacist said that even cholesterol medication will need 1- 3 months to take effect.
She was very surprised and said it is a miracle.
Review:
I immediately followed an advice of a friend who told me about Black fungus (Mok Yee).
He had four block heart arteries, over 90 percent blocked.
His cardiologist advised him to go for bypass surgery, failing which he would suffer an imminent heart attack.
His sinseh ( chinese physician) friend advised him against surgery as the procedure would be messy, painful experience.
He followed the advise of his sinseh friend by consuming Mok Yee daily.
After consuming boiled Mok Yee juice for 40 days, he went for an angiogram.
His heart specialist was surprised and shocked that his arteries were all cleared of any blockage and it would not be necessary to see him for another 10 years!
My observation is that Mok Yee juice is not only effective in treating high blood cholestrol but also helps to bring relief to joint paints, arthritis and poor blood circulation.
An internet info. claims that Mok Yee reduces blood clot, preventing thrombosis, atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, and cancer. Black contains abundant protein, ferric, calcium, vitamin, rough fibre, the content of protein is equal to meat.
Preparation :
1) Pick a hand full of Mok Yee and soak in water for 1-2 hours
2) Wash Mok Yee and cut to pieces with scissors.
3) Pour five bowls of plain water into slow cooker (crock pot)
4) Put 2-3 slices of ginger, 8-10 red dates, 20 kay chee (wolf berry) into the slow crock pot.
5) Bring to boil for 8 hours. One and a half bowls of Mok Yee juice will remain after boiling overnight.
Consumption :
You may consume for 10 to 14 days according to the severity of the problem.
For those with low blood pressure consume less or only for alternate days.
Drink Mok Yee first thing in the morning with an 'empty stomach'.
Consume at least one large bowl.
Take breakfast 2 hours later. Side effects - you may feel a little tired after 3- 4 days.
Consume multivitamins and fresh fruits and vegetables daily.
Do not eat oily or fried foods during this period
Observation :
Dark and oily stool during the first two days.
Remarks :
Cholesterol medication is chemical in nature and may harm the liver. Mok Yee is a plant and does not contain chemicals.
Take blood test for blood cholesterol before and after treatment.
Pls share your experience with friends.

Life Lesson - Beautiful Story
From our Alumni. Too beautiful MUST share this story with you (MUST READ)
A Story to live by...........
There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind.
She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her.
She told her boyfriend, 'If I could only see the world, I will marry you.'
有一位瞎女很討厭自己因為眼睛瞎了。她也討厭每個人,唯一不討厭的是她的男朋友,因為他都常守在她身旁。於是她對她的男朋友說:「如果能讓我看到這個世界,我愿意嫁給你!」
One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her.
When the bandages came off, she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend.
有一天,有人捐了一對眼精給她。當紗布解開時,她能夠看到一切,包括她的男朋友。
He asked her, 'Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?'
The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind.
The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn't expected that.
The thought of looking at them the rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him.
Her boyfriend left in tears and days later wrote a note to her saying: 'Take good care of your eyes, my dear, for before they were yours, they were mine.'
於是,她的男朋友很傷心的離開她,幾天後寫了字條給她:「親愛的,請你好好照顧你的眼睛,因為它不是屬於你的之前,它是屬於我的。」

FEATURES: 2008 BMW M1 Homage Concept
April 28, 2008
By David Gluckman
Source:http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/0804_bmw_m1_homage_concept/index.html
BMW has created the M1 Homage in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the M1. The design study was unveiled at the 2008 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este held in Cernobbio, Italy.
Produced from 1978 to 1981, the M1 was BMW's first and only mid-engined street car. The project was originally contracted to Lamborghini for chassis development and assembly, but when the Italian firm hit a financial rough patch BMW took over. A total of 456 M1s were built.
The original car was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and was itself based on the 1972 BMW Turbo concept penned by Paul Bracq. BMW has kept the overall proportions and many design cues of the M1 alive on the Homage, including the small kidney grille, hood vents, and rear window louvers. Also present are the original's hidden headlights, but instead of pop-up units the lights on the M1 Homage are tucked under the hood overhang and are only visible when illuminated.
The M1 was powered by a 3.5-liter six-cylinder that was later modified and used in the M5 and M6. No powertrain details were shared for the M1 Homage as the car was built as a design showpiece.

Health - Eye Care

Build Up Better Vision by Martin Sussman
(source: http://www.bettervision.com/EM2008-12-b-lnd.html)
"How Flexible Are Your Eyes?"
Those of us who are near- or far-sighted have a rigid focusing system so that the muscles that control our ability to focus are more stiff and inflexible than they need to be to focus clearly.
TRY THIS NOW: (without glasses or contacts)
Hold your hand up near your face and focus on it, and then quickly look at something past your hand in the distance. Then look back at your hand. Out of the corner of your eye notice the same distant item.
If you've got clear vision, here's what you should see:
Your hand will be clearer than the distant item when you are focusing on your hand. When you're focused on the distant item, it will be clearer than your hand.
However, if you're nearsighted, your hand will be clearer, even when you're looking at the distant item.
And if you're farsighted, the distant item will be clearer, even when you're looking at your hand.
In other words, if you've got a vision problem, your eyes can't change focus, swiftly, easily and sharply, from far to near.
Many people think there's nothing that can be done about that, perhaps even believing that it's because the eye is the wrong shape (that's another one of the 5 Vision Myths that I tear apart in The Program for Better Vision).
But you can train the muscles in your eyes to focus better at different distances, and here's why:
FATTER OR FLATTER:CAN YOUR LENS MAKE THE CHANGE?
The lens in the eye changes its shape to bring objects into focus. The lens needs to be flatter to see objects that are further away more clearly. And it needs to become fatter to focus on something closer.
We are always changing what we are looking at, so the lens is continually making fine adjustments in its shape.
Normally, the lens changes its focus - and thus its shape - more than 100,000 times each and every day.
The shape of the lens is controlled by a group of muscles that surround the lens. These muscles have to work together to change the lens into the exact shape required to bring whatever you are looking at into sharp focus.
This changing of the eye's focusing power is called Accommodation. (It's one of the 6 Critical Visual Skills you'll develop when you use The Program for Better Vision.)
But if you've got a vision problem, these muscles around the lens become stuck and stiff. Some of them can't relax when they need to, while others can't stretch when they need to.
If you're nearsighted, they're stuck for near vision and the lens has too much power. On the other hand, if you're farsighted, these muscles are stuck for distance vision; the lens has too little focusing power.
Like any other group of muscle in the body, the muscles around the lens can be exercised. When you exercise them correctly, they can regain flexibility and tone, and they'll work the way that they're supposed to.
Here's one exercise from The Program for Better Vision that re-trains accommodation: Near-To-Far Shifting.
TRY THIS NOW: (without glasses or contacts)
1. Look at your finger, about 4-6 inches in front of your eyes.2. Shift your focus to a distant target, at least 10 feet away.3. Shift your focus back and forth from your finger to the distant target 10 - 20 times.4. Repeat as many times during the day as you remember. The more the better!
Make sure that your focus rests for a brief moment before you shift your vision again.
With practice, you'll be able to train the muscles around the lens to become more flexible and to change focus more easily and quickly. The result: You'll see better and better through an increasing range of distances.
Near-To-Far Shifting is one of 24 different exercises, techniques and processes that you'll find in The Program for Better Vision.
The Program for Better Vision: A powerfully effective combination of eye exercises, muscle control techniques, brain/eye coordination and complete body, mind and eye relaxation.
An interesting eye exercise.
Hope that it works for you as it has done for me.

Semiconductor Industry
Dear fellow alumni,
Today, I would like to share a personal experience with you.
My personal experience in the Semiconductor industry started two decades ago at AMD. At that time, I was so "green" that I do not realize that I was venturing into an industry that was going to shape the way we do business, change our lifestyle and communicate. It was so new to me even when it was already 4 decades old. Everything looks so new to me.
So, it struck my mind to share this article with all of you, just in case you have not heard about this industry.
As time pass, I realized that this is a fast paced industry. The pace was governed by Moore's Law (A 1965 prediction by Gordon Moore, Intel's Co-Founder). Moore's Law, states that the number of transistors on a chip will double about every two years. Intel has kept that pace for almost 4 decades, leading the way and on hot pursuit by other Semiconductor manufacturers (source: http://www.intel.com/technology/mooreslaw/ ).
To most of us, we take for granted that mobile phones, LCD TV, DVD player, MP3 player, computer and digital watch are just ordinary inventions out of needs. But, I would like to point out that these miracle electronic gadgets would not be invented if the silicon-germanium junctions transistors were not discovered.
The Semiconductor history started with the discovery of the Si-Ge transistor by John Bardeen and Walter Brattain of Bell Laborotary in 1947. The discovery paved the way to miniturisation of gadgets. Today, the central processor unit (cpu), the brain of a computer is only 2" x 2" x 0.25" in size, weighed only 100 grams and constructed over 800 million transistors. The first computer, ENIAC weighed 27 tons, was roughly 8.5 feet by 3 feet by 80 feet (2.6 m by 0.9 m by 26 m), took up 680 square feet (63 m²) of space was commissioned in 1946.
(source:http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Andrew_Wylie/history.htm source: http://www.intel.com/technology/timeline.pdf)
The Semiconductor industry is ranked 20 out of the Standard & Poor Top 500 Ranking, registering monthly sales of US$ 23 billion until Sept., 2008 when the world faced an economic meltdown Sales after then had been sluggish and demand for Semiconductor chips had suffered a drastic decline.
(source:http://www.businessweek.com/pdfs/2004/0414_bw50industries.pdf source :http://www.rncos.com/Blog/2008/11/Growth-in-Global-Semiconductor-Sales-Dying-Down.html ).
Anyway, we would not have computers, laptops, PDA, cell phones, blackberry, digital cameras, ipods, calculators and many other gadgets without Semiconductor industry. Imagine a world without them. Maybe life would have been simpler.
Embeded within these gadgets are semiconductor chips made from silicon wafers and interconnected with tiny aluminium, gold and copper wires of sizes as small as 20um diameter, ten times smaller than the human hair by wire bonders.
The following video shows a wire bonder in action. This equipment is capable to placed 100 mils long gold wires of 25um diameter at the rate of 16 wires per sec.
Let us hope the economy will improve by end 2009 and more trendy gadgets will be available by then. Till then.
Cheerios!

Till then.
Cheerios!
